SHELDON NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE
Thousands of pronghorn, deer, bighorn sheep, sage grouse and others roam on hundreds of thousands of acres of wilderness here in Northern Nevada. The refuge, which also has beautiful mountains, dark skies and geological features, was established to benefit pronghorn populations. Pronghorn populations in Nevada rapidly shrunk in the early 1900’s. Nonnative animals such as horses, sheep and cattle were overtaking the habitat. The Audubon Society and Boone and Crockett Club bought the more than 30,000-acre Last Chance Ranch to create an antelope refuge. In 1936, President Franklin D. Roosevelt enlarged the refuge to nearly 540,000 acres. |
